Business Council Hosts U.S. Ambassador to
Saudi Arabia Dr. Joseph W. Westphal in Riyadh

On September 17, 2014, the U.S.-Saudi Arabian Business Council (USSABC) hosted a luncheon in Riyadh for Dr. Joseph W. Westphal, honoring his recent appointment as U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The program brought together high-level executives and government officials from the U.S. and Saudi Arabia to highlight the U.S.-Saudi bilateral business relationship. Eng. Mohamed Al-Mady, Saudi Arabian Co-Chairman, USSABC, and Vice Chairman and CEO, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), noted, “Over the past two decades, the Council has worked tirelessly to develop innumerable new business relationships that have contributed to the increasing annual trade between the two countries.  This luncheon in honor of Ambassador Westphal epitomizes the founding spirit of the Council’s mission – to foster, develop, and expand the strategic business alliance between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia.”  More...

Secretary Kerry Travels to Kingdom,
Meets Saudi and GCC Officials

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Saudi Arabia on September 11, 2014 to meet with senior Saudi officials to discuss regional security and bilateral partnerships. Secretary Kerry’s visit followed a phone call on the prior day between President Barack Obama and Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah. While in Jeddah, Secretary Kerry met with King Abdullah alongside U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Dr. Joseph Westphal joined Secretary Kerry for a meeting with H.R.H. Prince Saud Al-Faisal Bin Abdul Aziz, Minister of Foreign Affairs. Additionally, Secretary Kerry and Prince Saud were scheduled to meet with foreign ministers from a host of other countries including Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon, and Iraq to discuss broader regional security and cooperation initiatives.

Saudi Arabia Ranks 24th in
Global Competitiveness Report

On September 3, 2014, the World Economic Forum released its annual report titled The Global Competitiveness Report 2014-2015. In the most recent report, Saudi Arabia ranked 24th among the 144 countries reviewed by the World Economic Forum. The current ranking represents a slight decrease as the Kingdom was ranked 20th in the 2013-2014 report. The position makes Saudi Arabia the second highest rated of the 20 largest emerging market economies, behind only Malaysia.  More..

CMA Releases Draft Rules for
Foreign Investment in Stock Market

On August 21, 2014, the Capital Market Authority (CMA) released a draft set of regulations for foreigners interested in investing in the Tadawul, the Saudi Arabia’s stock exchange. Gulf Cooperation Council nationals have been allowed to invest directly in the Tadawul since 2007 and in 2008 the CMA allowed licensed Saudi intermediaries, such as investment banks and brokerages, to enter into swap agreements with non-resident foreign investors.  More...

As part of its mission to develop and expand the strategic business alliance between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, the U.S.-Saudi Arabian Business Council (USSABC) organized a series of upcoming programs in collaboration with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP).
