USSABC Hosts Saudi Arabian Minister of Commerce and Industry

WASHINGTON, D.C., — (U.S. Newswire) — May 27, 2009 —
The U.S.-Saudi Arabian Business Council (USSABC) is hosting a private reception and dinner honoring His Excellency Abdullah Alireza, Minister of Commerce and Industry of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 in Seattle, Washington. Attendees will include high-level corporate leaders and state and local officials. This is the first time since Minister Alireza was appointed to this position that the Business Council will have the honor to host him.

H.E. Abdullah Alireza was appointed Minister of Commerce and Industry in March 2008. He has been an outspoken champion for stronger U.S.-Saudi business relations, as well as a staunch supporter of the USSABC and its activities. Prior to his appointment as Minister of Commerce and Industry, H.E. Abdullah Alireza served as a Minister of State without portfolio.

Business has always been at the forefront of the U.S.-Saudi relationship. Bilateral trade between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia has increased from $160 million in 1970 to over $67.3 billion in 2008. Trade relations between the State of Washington and Saudi Arabia have almost doubled over the past several years, from $49.4 million in 2006 to $84 million in 2008. Some of the leading companies with a major presence in the Kingdom include Boeing and Microsoft, both members of the Business Council, as well as Starbucks. Smaller companies such as Diamond Solutions and HySecurity are successfully penetrating the Saudi market and are taking advantage of the numerous business opportunities in the Kingdom. Washington’s core industries are aerospace, electronics and computers, forest products, life sciences, marine services, telecommunications and information technology, tourism, value-added agriculture, and food processing. All of these industries have a large potential market in Saudi Arabia.
