December 2, 2008 – The U.S. and Saudi Arabia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on science and technology cooperation, formalizing decades of scientific collaboration between the two countries. The MOU was signed in Riyadh by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans, Environment, and Science Claudia McMurray and Prince Turki bin Saud, Vice President of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST). The five-year agreement will facilitate cooperation in important areas, such as science and technology entrepreneurship, materials sciences, water purification, methods of education, and biotechnology. The two countries will also study ways to protect the marine ecosystem and diminish negative aspects of climate change.
