Sipchem Launches Two Jubail Chemical Plants
July 6, 2010 - Saudi International Petrochemicals Company (Sipchem) has recently begun production at two out of three new chemical plants at its Jubail Industrial City production complex. The new plants include a 345,000 ton per year (t/y) carbon monoxide plant and a 450,000 t/y acetic acid plant. A third 33,000 t/y vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) plant will begin production in July 2010. U.S. company Fluor Corporation built the acetic acid and VAM units under contracts awarded in 2005, and a joint venture of Germany’s Lurgi and France’s Air Liquide built the carbon monoxide plant. U.S. companies Eastman Chemical and DuPont supplied the technology for the acetic acid and VAM production units, respectively.
