ILS Successfully Launches Arabsat Satellite
June 4, 2010 – U.S. company International Launch Services (ILS) successfully carried the BADR-5 satellite to geosynchronous transfer orbit on an ILS Proton vehicle for Arabsat of Riyadh. Arabsat is the largest satellite operator in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and has been ranked the 9th largest satellite operator in the world.
The BADR-5 satellite, built by European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company Astrium and French company Thales Alenia Space, is the first of Arabsat’s fifth generation satellites to expand the communications capabilities for the region. The BADR-5 was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome, the world's first and largest operational space launch facility in Kazakhstan, and is expected to have a service time of 15 years. |
