ABB Signs $8.3 Million Contract to Service GCC Power Grid
June 3, 2010 – ABB recently signed a service contract with the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority to provide maintenance for equipment and systems at the Gulf Interconnection Grid's newly constructed substations. The two-year contract, valued at $8.3 million (SR31.1 million), will aim to optimize the grid's reliability through regular maintenance and provide technical and emergency assistance when required.
Substations covered under the agreement include Fadhili, Ghunan, Salwa and Al-Qurayyah in Saudi Arabia; Al-Jasra in Bahrain; Al-Zour in Kuwait; and Doha South in Qatar. ABB built each of the seven substations included in the agreement. When complete, the interconnection project will link the six states in the GCC, enabling the countries to use electricity more efficiently and establish an energy trading market. The scheme will be carried out in three phases. ABB completed its role of the first phase of the project in late 2009 at a cost of $1.2 billion (SR4.5 billion) with the construction of substations to establish a north grid that connects Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar. Phase two will involve the connection of the independent systems of the UAE with Oman to form a south grid, and the third and final stage will join the north and south grids. |
