Shuqaiq Desalination Plant Begins Production
June 1, 2010 – Shuqaiq Water and Electricity Company announced that its combined desalination and power plant north of Jizan recently started production. The $1.9 billion (SR7.2 billion) project is currently generating 212,000 cubic meters of desalinated water per day and 340 megawatts of electricity per hour (MWh), with plans to increase electric output to 850 MWh by the end of 2010. Shuqaiq Water and Electricty Company expects work on the plant to be completed on-schedule and under-budget. Shuqaiq is one of 10 combined desalination and power plants commissioned by the Saudi Government in conjunction with the private sector in 2004 in an effort to supply increased demand for water and power in Saudi Arabia.
