SEC, U.S. Companies Partner to Increase Power Production
May 16, 2010 – Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) announced recently that it was offering American firms tenders to build a group of power plants with a combined output of 30,000 megawatts (MW). The projects are estimated to cost between $70-80 billion (SR262-300 billion) and will be completed over the next 10 years. American companies have already become involved in the process, acting both as investors and contractors in the Kingdom. In May 2010, General Electric Company (GE) received a $300 million (SR1.13 billion) contract from SEC to supply five steam turbines to the Qurayyah Open Cycle Power Plant in the Eastern Province. Once installed, these turbines will combine with 15 existing GE gas turbines to upgrade the power plant to a combined-cycle facility, increasing its power output while decreasing relative carbon emissions. SEC’s partnerships with GE and other American companies will help provide for an expected 20,000 MW increase in power demand by 2019.
