Crown Prince Naif Dies, Prince Salman Named as Successor
H.R.H. Crown Prince Naif bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud died in Geneva, Switzerland, Saturday, June 16, 2012. A funeral was held for the Crown Prince the following day in Makkah. Crown Prince Naif held the posts of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and was in line to succeed Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah as monarch. He had chaired various committees including the Higher Hajj Committee, the Higher Civil Defense Council, the Council of Governors, the Board of Directors at Naif Arab University for Security Sciences, the Higher Industrial Security Commission, the Higher Information Council, Supervisor of the Authority of Investigation and Public Prosecution, the Manpower Council, the Board of the Human Resources Development Fund, and Chief of the Supreme Commission for Tourism. Crown Prince Naif was also the General Supervisor for Relief and Humanitarian Committees and Campaigns in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Honorary President of the Saudi Charitable Society for the Welfare of Saudi Families Abroad, and Chairman of the Board of the Human Resources Development Fund.
On June 18, 2012, King Abdullah named H.R.H. Prince Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, Minister of Defense, the new Crown Prince and Deputy Premier. Prince Salman became Minister of Defense in October 2011 when the former Minister of Defense and Aviation and Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud passed away. King Abdullah additionally appointed H.R.H. Prince Ahmed bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud as Minister of Interior. Prince Ahmed was previously Vice Minister of Interior.
